Prepare for each border in the journey.

Flying into mainland Ecuador, crossing a land border and continuing to Galápagos can involve different checks. Verify each step against official sources before departure.

Read the entry sequence

Start with three checks

Start with the traveler, then the route.

The examples here concern ordinary U.S. and Canadian passports used for tourism. Other nationalities, residence status, emergency documents, work or study can require a different process. Make a separate checklist for each person traveling, including children. Then add every transit country and border crossing, rather than checking only the flight into Quito or Guayaquil.

  1. 01
    Read the validity date carefully.

The U.S. State Department states six months of passport validity beyond arrival. Canada’s guidance states six months beyond expected departure for a regular Canadian passport. Those are different reference dates. Check the rule for your document and carrier, and resolve a marginal expiry date before buying nonrefundable travel.

  2. 02
Add earlier visits to the new stay.

The cited U.S. and Canadian guidance generally allows visa-free tourism up to 90 days within a 12-month period. A calendar-year change should not be treated as an automatic reset. If previous visits bring you close to the allowance, ask Ecuador’s immigration authority to confirm your record and the correct process before planning another long stay.

  3. 03
    Identify the actual entry point.

Arrival by air and entry across a land or river border from Colombia or Peru can involve different checks. Record the crossing you intend to use and verify its current operation and requirements. A bus or tour reservation establishes transport, not your eligibility to enter. Check the onward country’s requirements as well if Ecuador is part of a longer overland journey.

Galápagos is an additional entry process

Prepare the mainland-to-islands connection.

Galápagos adds its own transit-control and biosecurity processes. Keep those distinct from admission to mainland Ecuador and from the protected-area entry charge. Allow time at the mainland departure airport to complete the current required steps before the island flight.

The Galápagos Governing Council’s TCT guidance lists a US$20 Transit Control Card charge and identification and return-travel requirements. Follow the current instructions for registration and airport validation. Completing an online form should not be assumed to replace every airport step.

  1. 01
    Keep the island itinerary together

Save your arrival and departure flights, accommodation details and any organized-tour confirmation in one accessible place. A mainland hotel reservation does not describe the island stay. If you change islands or flights after preparing the documents, make sure the information you carry reflects the revised bookings.

  2. 02
    Separate the charges

The official park tariff lists US$200 for the standard foreign adult category, with other categories and rates. Added to the US$20 TCT, that is US$220 for that category before flights or activities. Check each traveler’s category and current payment instructions; do not multiply the adult figure into an assumed family bill.

  3. 03
    Complete the passenger goods declaration

ABG provides the passenger declaration and permitted-product catalogue through its SIABG portal. Review food and other organic material before packing and follow baggage-inspection instructions. The declaration is a separate task from buying a transit card. Keep its confirmation accessible through the airport process.

Before you leave home

Resolve the difficult documents first.

A missing reservation can often be retrieved quickly; renewing a passport or obtaining an authenticated document can take longer. Work through the process in that order. Save the official page and the date you checked it, then recheck before departure for changes that affect the actual itinerary.

  1. 01
    Before committing to travel

Check passport validity, visa eligibility, previous time in Ecuador and any special document needs. For a land crossing, confirm what must be issued, translated or authenticated before you leave home. Include transit-country requirements even if you do not intend to leave the connecting airport.

  2. 02
    Once the route is booked

Match passenger names and document details across flights, accommodation and any island or lodge arrangements. Keep the first accommodation address and your planned exit from Ecuador readily available. Ask the carrier to resolve document questions using your actual nationality, passport and routing.

  3. 03
    At the entry checkpoint

Use the official immigration process and check that your entry has been recorded. Canada specifically warns about problems when travelers arriving overland leave without an entry stamp. Do not continue on the assumption that a driver or an open crossing has completed immigration for you; ask the officer before leaving the checkpoint.

Check the cases that change the answer

A checklist for your actual itinerary.

Use these examples to identify which official question to ask. A general tourism allowance does not settle every passport, health, border or family-travel situation.

01

A return visit

Count the earlier days.

Suppose a traveler has already spent 40 days in Ecuador within the relevant 12-month period and wants a further 60-day visit. Those visits total 100 days; the new flight is not evidence of a fresh 90-day allowance. Confirm the official record and available immigration process before reserving a stay that exceeds the usual limit.

Keep prior arrival and departure dates together. If a record or stamp appears wrong, resolve it with Ecuador Migration rather than relying on a personal spreadsheet as permission to remain.

02

Colombia or Peru by land

Verify the record-check paperwork.

Canada’s current advice describes a criminal-record check covering five years, from the country of origin or residence, with an apostilled original and Spanish translation for land or river arrivals from Colombia or Peru. It also describes a migration-system check when a document is unavailable. Confirm the exact process with Ecuador’s authorities; do not treat that alternative as guaranteed clearance.

Ask which document issuer, authentication and translation the crossing accepts before leaving the place where you can obtain them. Rules and local border operations are separate checks.

03

Yellow-fever documentation

Distinguish entry rules from health advice.

An Ecuador Tourism Ministry announcement dated August 27, 2025 removed the certificate requirement for travelers coming from Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, replacing it with a vaccination recommendation. Earlier summaries may still describe the superseded requirement. This announcement should not be generalized to every origin or transit country.

Check current requirements for the complete route, and discuss vaccination suitability with a travel-health clinician. A border-document requirement and a medical recommendation answer different questions; the absence of one does not settle the other.

04

Children and different passports

Check each traveler separately.

A family may travel together while holding different nationalities or document types. List each person’s passport, expiry date and relevant status rather than copying one adult’s checklist for everyone. Where a child travels with one parent, a guardian or another adult, ask the relevant authorities and carrier what evidence or consent is required for the particular journey.

Dual nationals, residents and travelers using temporary or emergency documents should obtain guidance for that status. This ordinary-tourist summary does not establish their entry or exit requirements.

05

A multi-country journey

Recheck the last change to the route.

Replacing a direct flight with a connection, or replacing a flight with a land crossing, can alter the paperwork. Check the new transit country, airport changes and any overnight outside the transit area. Health-document questions can depend on countries visited or transited, so give the carrier and consulate the full itinerary.

When seeking clarification, include nationality, passport type, arrival date, mode of entry, earlier stays and onward destination. A precise inquiry is more useful than asking whether Ecuador “needs a visa” in general.

06

At departure

Keep records reachable without a signal.

Carry the original travel documents and keep secure copies separately. Save the official confirmations you actually need, accommodation contact details and onward reservations for offline access. Avoid storing the only copy inside an account that requires a text message you may not receive while traveling.

After arrival, keep the entry evidence with the trip records. If you lose a document or discover an error, contact the responsible authority promptly rather than waiting until the airport check-in for departure.
