Three bases, with time in each

Make the southbound journey worthwhile.

This version gives Quito three complete days, Baños two and Cuenca four. It suits travelers interested in city history, food, craft and a choice of mountain or valley outings. The main transport decision is Baños to Cuenca on day eight; the plan then assumes a booked Cuenca–Quito flight on day thirteen. Check those two journeys before confirming hotels. Arrival on day one and international departure on day fourteen are part of the fourteen days.

  1. 01
    Quito · nights 1–4

Use the historic center and another city subject, with one optional northern-highlands day. Return to the same Quito room after any day trip instead of adding a short extra hotel stay.

  2. 02
    Baños · nights 5–7

Travel on day five. Days six and seven can hold a waterfall outing and a different town, thermal or guided-activity day.

  3. 03
    Cuenca · nights 8–12

Day eight is a substantial road transfer, not a sightseeing day. The four following days allow the center, river, craft and a conditions-dependent Cajas visit.

  4. 04
    Quito area · night 13

Fly back on day thirteen and stay before the international departure on day fourteen. Choose the last room for the actual onward airport journey.

Otavalo neighborhoods rising into the northern AndesOtavalo · Imbabura

01—04 · Days one through four

Use Quito as a four-night base.

The opening stay gives the capital enough time to feel like a place rather than an airport connection. Choose one optional excursion from the same room. Otavalo adds markets and northern-highlands culture; another Quito day avoids a long outing and can be just as useful when museums or food are the priority.

  1. 01
Arrive and settle into the chosen district.

Keep the first evening near the accommodation and agree how the airport pickup handles a late flight. A historic-center stay, northern neighborhood and airport-area room offer different daily routines. Use the Quito base comparison before booking four nights at an address chosen only from its room photographs.

  2. 02
Walk the historic center with one main interior.

Follow Plaza Grande toward La Compañía and San Francisco, choosing the church or museum visit that matters most. Add lunch within the same area and leave time to look at the connecting streets. The Quito walking guide provides the sequence. Save a distant district for another day rather than spending the afternoon crossing the city.

  3. 03
Choose a focused Otavalo day or stay in Quito.

For Otavalo, make Plaza de Ponchos and a meal the core, then select one additional museum or prearranged workshop. A lake circuit, craft towns and several demonstrations need a different allocation. Saturday has the fullest market program, but align the actual date and visit arrangements before switching days. Return to Quito that evening; an overnight in Otavalo would change the room count.

  4. 04
Give the remaining city interest its own time.

Choose a museum, a market meal or a neighborhood walk you left out. This is also the day to use if the northern outing moves for access or weather. Leave the later afternoon available for laundry, packing and confirming the Baños transfer. The trip already contains a possible highland outing at Cajas, so another high-elevation excursion is not necessary for variety.

Baños glowing beneath steep Andean slopes at nightBaños · Tungurahua

05—07 · Arrival and two full Baños days

Separate the gorge from the second activity.

Three Baños nights make two complete days possible without rushing the arrival. Use the first for the Waterfall Route if that is your priority; let the second offer something different. The longer stay is useful precisely because you do not have to put a pool session, gorge walk and adventure activity into one crowded afternoon.

  1. 05
Travel from Quito and get to know the center.

Treat the journey as the day's main commitment. After arrival, locate the basilica, nearby food options and the meeting place for the next outing. Cabellera de la Virgen and a thermal facility may fit a short local plan, subject to current access and sessions. Confirm the precise La Virgen facility before buying an entrance.

  2. 06
Build a Waterfall Route day around Río Verde.

Choose Agoyán or Manto de la Novia as an earlier stop and give the selected Pailón del Diablo entrance enough time for its actual paths. Different entrances do not promise the same view or walking experience. The Baños destination guide explains the choices; arrange the journey back as well as the outward stops.

  3. 07
Use the second day for a different interest.

Choose a guided rafting or canyoning session if suitable, or keep a slower town and thermal day. Confirm the activity's equipment, instruction and conditions directly with the provider. Avoid a late finish that complicates packing and rest before the southbound transfer. The following day needs attention of its own rather than being treated as another excursion.

Tomebamba River moving through CuencaCuenca · Azuay

08—12 · The southbound move and Cuenca

Give Cuenca four complete days.

Five Cuenca nights justify the long journey south. The city has enough distinct subjects to change the emphasis each day: its planned street grid and cathedrals, the Tomebamba river edge, toquilla-straw craft and the higher landscape around Cajas. Keep the order flexible around museum access and conditions.

  1. 08
Make the Baños–Cuenca transfer the whole plan.

Obtain a complete road itinerary, including any vehicle changes, terminal access and the hotel arrival. Do not label the day a sightseeing drive unless a provider has actually included the stops and timings you want. If the journey is too demanding, compare the Quito-and-flight alternative below before paying for rooms. An evening Cuenca activity should remain optional.

  2. 09
    Connect the plazas and cathedrals.

Begin at Parque Calderón, compare the Old and New Cathedrals, and continue toward Plaza de las Flores and San Francisco. Choose an interior rather than trying to enter every building. Make Mercado 10 de Agosto a deliberate meal stop, then use the afternoon for a short river walk or an unhurried return through the center. See the Cuenca city route.

  3. 10
Choose craft or the city's earlier history.

The Municipal de la Paja Toquilla y el Sombrero on Rafael María Arízaga gives the hat-making tradition a particular setting. It is a different address from the hat museum near Calle Larga. Choose one for its actual program and pair it with a suitable walk. Alternatively, give Pumapungo's museum and archaeological setting the day’s main attention, checking which spaces are open.

  4. 11
Consider Cajas as a separate mountain outing.

Choose the route for its elevation, conditions and walking demands. ETAPA's route table distinguishes the higher Toreadora trail from the lower Uku trail; a low difficulty label is not a personalized altitude clearance. Check registration, current access and return transport with the park or an authorized provider. The Cajas planning Story helps compare the outing with another city day.

  5. 12
Use the day you deliberately kept.

If weather moves the Cajas visit, this day can take its place. Otherwise choose the craft, museum or river visit you have not yet made, or return to a part of the city you enjoyed. A slower afternoon also gives time to pack and confirm the flight. Stay in Cuenca tonight; the departure-city move happens on day thirteen.

13—14 · Days thirteen and fourteen

Return before the international flight.

This version finishes through Quito, with the domestic return on day thirteen and the international departure on day fourteen. The final night is included in the thirteen-night total. Use the Cuenca airport's flight information to identify operators, then confirm the actual itinerary, baggage and ticket conditions directly with the airline.

  1. 13
Fly from Cuenca to Quito and check in.

Allow for both airport transfers and the domestic check-in process. Choose the last hotel around the following flight, not around a sightseeing plan you may have little time to use. When tickets are separate, understand who assists if a delay breaks the later connection; an overnight reduces time pressure but does not create a guarantee.

  2. 14
Depart on the confirmed international booking.

Keep the journey to the airport straightforward and work backward from the airline’s check-in requirement. Check the calendar carefully for flights leaving after midnight. If your international trip instead begins in Cuenca on a through-ticket, redraw the last two days around that specific booking rather than paying for the generic Quito night automatically.

Alternatives that still fit fourteen days

Change the transfers on paper first.

A longer stay works best when the route suits your tolerance for road travel. These alternatives change the allocation explicitly; none adds a hidden night to the end.

01

Road alternative

Return to Quito before flying south.

If the day-eight Baños–Cuenca road journey does not suit you, return to Quito on day eight, fly to Cuenca on day nine and stay there for nights nine through twelve. That gives Cuenca four nights and three full days. Remove the spare day or one city subject rather than pretending the flight adds sightseeing time without cost.

02

Fewer bases

Split the trip between Quito and Cuenca.

Omit Baños and use six nights in Quito, six in Cuenca and the final Quito-area night. Travel south on day seven and return on day thirteen. This suits a stronger city, museum and craft focus and allows excursions without changing hotels. Check the actual flights before attaching fixed activities to either transfer day.

03

Highland choice

Replace an outing instead of adding another.

If Cotopaxi is the main interest, use a suitable Quito day for that excursion and remove Otavalo or the second city subject. Cajas is still a separate highland decision later in the trip. Read the altitude guide and discuss the exact elevations and exertion with a clinician where appropriate.

04

Different airport

Assess Guayaquil before choosing it as the exit.

Compare the complete journey before changing the Quito finish to Guayaquil. Check the available flights, the road transfer from Cuenca, luggage and any overnight needed before departure. A shorter line on the map does not always produce an easier final day. Use the Guayaquil guide if you want to add a city visit rather than simply change airports.

05

Coast or Amazon

Exchange a base for a different region.

A beach stay or rainforest program needs its own arrival, full activity days and exit. Replace Baños or Cuenca rather than attaching it to the departure night. Compare the Andes–Amazon route if the forest matters most, or the coastal route when current advice and your travel arrangements support that choice.

06

Cost comparison

Compare the route total.

Price thirteen nights, the complete Baños–Cuenca movement, the domestic return and activities you actually intend to take. Then price the flight alternative with its additional Quito room and both airport transfers. The budget worksheet helps keep shared room and vehicle costs separate from per-person tickets.

Route sources

Check the details that can change.

Heritage, museum and park sources support the named visits. The flight-information page helps identify the Cuenca–Quito connection, but the airline must confirm service on your date. The thirteen-night allocation and alternative routes are our editorial suggestions.

The mainland advantage

Three bases, with room to understand them.

Quito, Baños and Cuenca offer different kinds of day without requiring a new room every evening. The route keeps the long southbound move visible and uses the final night for the return, rather than borrowing it from the Cuenca stay.

Thirteen nights: Quito 4, Baños 3, Cuenca 5, Quito area 1. One long road day: Compare the day-eight journey with the flight alternative before booking. Departure on day fourteen: The domestic return happens the previous day.
