Day 9

Three landscapes, nine nights

Choose one Amazon base.

This circuit starts and ends at Quito’s airport. It suits travelers who want city history and an active valley stay before exploring Napo’s rivers, forest and farming. The three Amazon nights belong either to a Tena town base with arranged outings or to one lodge with a coordinated program. Choose that model before booking the rest: a lodge’s road or boat connection may determine the transfer date. This is a suggested allocation, not a departure timetable.

  1. 01
    Quito · nights 1–3

Arrival on day one, a historic-center day on day two and another city visit on day three. Keep all three nights together. This plan does not require a Cotopaxi excursion before moving east.

  2. 02
    Baños · nights 4–5

Travel on day four. Day five is the complete waterfall, town or guided-activity day. Select the outing you most want instead of assuming two nights contain two full days.

  3. 03
    Tena area · nights 6–8

Transfer on day six, then reserve days seven and eight for the chosen forest program. Stay in one place rather than dividing the short visit between town and another lodge.

  4. 04
    Quito area · night 9

Return on day nine and depart on day ten. Confirm the entire journey from the forest accommodation to the final hotel, including any boat or local road section.

Dense central Quito neighborhoods rising toward the AndesQuito · Pichincha

01—03 · Days one through three

See Quito before moving east.

Three nights allow two full days between arrival and the Baños transfer. Keep one focused on the historic center and give the second a different subject. This makes Quito a meaningful part of the trip without depending on a high-altitude excursion immediately after landing.

  1. 01
    Make arrival a short day.

Arrange transport to the actual hotel entrance and keep the evening near your accommodation. Confirm the plan for a delayed flight before departure. Quito is already at altitude, so do not use arrival night to decide how strenuous the rest of the trip should be; the altitude guide explains what to discuss before traveling.

  2. 02
Explore the historic center in one sequence.

Start with the Plaza Grande–La Compañía–San Francisco route. Choose an interior that interests you, check admission and service times, and leave room for lunch. A museum or church visit is more useful when you have time to understand it than when it is one of several stops between cross-city transfers.

  3. 03
Choose a market, museum or another neighborhood.

Use the Quito food guide to choose a market by what you want to eat or learn, then pair it with one nearby visit. For example, the historic-center market options fit a different day from La Carolina in the north. Keep the evening available for packing and confirming the next pickup. A distant mountain outing is optional, not needed to complete this route.

Waterfall dropping through the green valley near BañosBaños · Tungurahua

04—05 · Days four and five

Give Baños one complete outing day.

Baños provides the valley stop between Quito and the Tena area. The two-night allocation lets you settle in after the road journey and choose one substantial activity on the following day. It does not need to duplicate the river activity you may already be booking near Tena.

  1. 04
Travel, then use the town locally.

Confirm the pickup, full journey and accommodation drop-off. If arrival leaves time, walk through the center toward the basilica or Cabellera de la Virgen. A visit to a La Virgen thermal facility needs its own current session and entrance information. Keep any pool booking flexible rather than making it depend on a precise road arrival.

  2. 05
Choose waterfalls or a guided activity.

A Waterfall Route day can focus on an earlier stop at Agoyán or Manto de la Novia and a fuller visit to the selected Pailón del Diablo entrance at Río Verde. Ask which path or viewpoint the ticket covers and how you return to town. If rafting or canyoning matters more, give that activity the day and compare it with the Tena program before booking both.

Fast water dropping through dark rock and rainforest near TenaTena · Napo

06—10 · Days six through ten

Spend two full days in Napo.

The Tena guide separates town, river and hosted visits. A town stay allows different operators and independent meals. A lodge may connect guiding, meals and transfers in one booking. Neither model is automatically more immersive: the named activities, guide, group and time in the field determine what you actually do.

  1. 06
Reach the chosen base and confirm the program.

For town accommodation, clarify whether the next day starts at the hotel or an operator’s meeting point. For a lodge, obtain the road endpoint, any boat departure and the last accepted arrival. Ask what happens if the incoming transfer is delayed. A room described as “near Tena” can still have a separate final journey, so include it in the booking before leaving Baños.

  2. 07
Choose a river or forest day with a clear purpose.

For rafting, ask which Jatunyaku section is proposed, how conditions are assessed and what instruction and equipment are included for your experience. For a forest walk, compare the route, walking demands and guide’s focus rather than the number of promised animals. If using a lodge program, choose from its confirmed activities instead of booking a competing town departure you cannot reliably reach.

  3. 08
    Make the second day different.

A prearranged chakra visit can explore Napo’s working agricultural landscapes. FAO describes these Indigenous-managed systems as combining food crops, trees and commercial crops such as cacao. Ask the host which parts of the farm and production are available to discuss; a tasting and a farm walk are different visits. Alternatively, choose a Puerto Misahuallí river outing with a named destination and return, or give a weather-affected activity another opportunity.

  4. 09
    Return to the Quito area.

Arrange checkout around the first boat or vehicle, and confirm who is responsible for each connection. End at the final hotel rather than assuming a drop-off somewhere in Quito finishes the trip. Choose that room in relation to the day-ten airport transfer. The long forest exit belongs today; an international departure is not a suitable fixed appointment at the end of the same journey.

  5. 10
    Leave the departure day free.

Use the confirmed transfer to Quito’s airport. Check the flight date, airline check-in requirement and any after-midnight departure carefully. This plan ends after nine nights. If you need a later departure, add the hotel night explicitly instead of shortening the forest exit.

Book the forest stay first

Compare the complete program.

These decisions are particularly important on this route because the Amazon stay can contain several transport and guiding services. Get the inclusions in one written booking before buying the surrounding hotel nights.

01

Town or lodge

Choose how you want ordinary days to work.

Use Tena when selecting meals, meeting different providers and changing the next day’s plan matter to you. Choose a lodge when a coordinated program is the reason for the stay. Ask how much unscheduled time it contains and whether optional activities cost extra. Avoid paying for an inclusive package and then spending most days arranging separate outings.

02

Access

Connect the Baños arrival to the actual check-in.

Ask the accommodation whether the day-six arrival can meet its transport window. If it cannot, revise the sequence before paying. Adding an unplanned Tena night would reduce the three-night forest stay or move the return. The transport guide helps compare the complete road and final-access journey.

03

Inclusions

Compare meals, guiding and equipment separately.

Request a list covering nights, meal times, drinking water arrangements, guided activities, entry charges and transfers. Check footwear, rain gear and any activity-specific equipment. Two quotes with the same room count may buy very different amounts of guided time. Compare cancellation and rescheduling terms alongside the price.

04

Hosted visits

Ask who is welcoming you.

For a community or farm visit, request the host or organization’s name, the planned activity, language and duration. Agree photographs and participation with the people involved. A useful visit might be a conversation about crops and land management; it does not require a staged performance or a promise to witness every cacao-processing step.

05

Alternative Amazon routes

Give Cuyabeno or Yasuní their own transfer plan.

They are not interchangeable addresses for the Tena nights. Compare the Tena, Cuyabeno and Yasuní travel models and the actual operator itinerary. A different gateway or fixed lodge schedule can require replacing Baños, changing flights or adding days. Do not leave that decision until after the mainland rooms are paid.

06

Luggage and health

Prepare for humidity and the return journey.

Keep essential medicine and a dry change protected separately from the main luggage. Ask the operator about bags on boats, charging and equipment drying. Use the packing guide for the core kit, and take the exact route to a travel-health professional for individualized advice. The destination name alone does not establish what preventive measures apply.

Route sources

Check the details that can change.

These sources support the named city visits, Waterfall Route, Tena setting and Napo chakra explanation. The calendar is our suggested allocation. A description of a place or farming system is not a bookable program: confirm the host, activity and complete lodge or town transfers.

The reason to add three days

Ten days with a real forest stay.

The route allows two complete Napo activity days while preserving Quito and a focused Baños visit. The final Quito-area night is already counted, so the journey home does not quietly take away the second forest day.

Nine nights: Quito 3, Baños 2, Tena area 3, Quito area 1. One Amazon base: Choose town or a coordinated lodge program before the other bookings. Return on day nine: Keep the forest exit separate from the flight home.
