Choose the coast you came to see

Check the route before choosing the beaches.

This seven-day, six-night route connects a Guayaquil arrival with two different coastal stays: Puerto López for Machalilla excursions, then Olón or Montañita for beach time and surf. Keep the return to the departure airport separate from a major outing. The day numbers are an editorial planning example; match them to your flights, chosen activities and the complete road transfers before reserving.

  1. 01
    Guayaquil · night 1

Arrive and reach the confirmed accommodation. Sightseeing is optional and depends on arrival time and the location of your accommodation; the plan does not assume a full city day after a flight.

  2. 02
    Puerto López · nights 2–4

Transfer on day two. Days three and four provide one land-focused outing and one offshore outing, or two separate land days. Stay in the same room throughout.

  3. 03
Olón or Montañita · night 5

Move on day five for a short beach-town stay. One night gives an afternoon and evening, not a full surf holiday. Skip this move if more Machalilla time matters most.

  4. 04
    Guayaquil · night 6

Return on day six and depart on day seven. The final hotel and complete road transfer must work with the actual airport booking.

Guayaquil and the broad Guayas River seen from Santa Ana HillGuayaquil · Guayas

01 · Day one

Use the first night for arrival.

The route begins through Guayaquil because the example’s coast transfers start there. The airport, hotel and sightseeing districts are different locations: check each part of the plan rather than treating an airline ticket as an assessment of the city stay.

  1. 01
Reach the accommodation before adding a visit.

Arrange a clear pickup point, destination address and response to a delayed flight. Keep the arrival meal and evening practical for that address. If the flight arrives late, the city portion may simply be a night before the onward journey. Do not prepay a tightly timed outing that assumes the plane and road transfer both arrive exactly as planned.

  2. If time
Choose one city subject under current local guidance.

The Guayaquil guide distinguishes the Malecón riverfront, Las Peñas and named museums. Choose a cultural visit or a suitable part of the riverfront rather than trying to cover the entire city on arrival. Museo Nacional del Cacao offers a specific food-history subject; check its actual visit arrangements and the journey there. Confirm the next morning’s coast transfer before the evening ends.

02—04 · Puerto López and two full days

Choose a land day and a sea day.

Puerto López is the base for this part of the week. Los Frailes, Agua Blanca and Isla de la Plata offer different reasons to visit. Two complete days cannot give all three an unhurried full-day treatment, so choose the combination that suits the group.

  1. 02
Travel to Puerto López and confirm the next departure.

Book the complete trip to the accommodation, including any terminal change or final local transfer. Keep the first afternoon near town if arrival permits. Establish whether an excursion meets at an office, a pier or the hotel; those are not automatically the same place. Check breakfast arrangements if the next departure is early.

  2. 03
Choose Los Frailes or a community-led Agua Blanca visit.

For Los Frailes, decide whether the main interest is the beach, dry-forest setting or a currently open viewpoint walk, and arrange the return before leaving town. Swimming is a separate conditions-dependent choice. At Agua Blanca, the community’s own program connects a museum, archaeological setting and sulfur lagoon, with other nature visits available by arrangement. Let the guide explain the place rather than reducing it to a lagoon photograph.

  3. 04
Use a complete day for the chosen boat outing.

Isla de la Plata combines the crossing with an island program, while a dedicated whale-watching departure may allocate its time differently. Ecuador’s tourism ministry gives June to September as the main whale season; dates do not guarantee sightings or suitable conditions. Confirm the actual vessel, guide, route and cancellation terms. If a boat day is unsuitable, use today for the land visit omitted yesterday.

05—07 · A short beach stay and the return

Count the one-night stop honestly.

Olón and Montañita offer different evenings and daily routines. This itinerary uses only one night there. Choose a room for the stay you can actually have, or use the simpler two-base version below if the extra check-in adds little.

  1. 05
Move south and keep the afternoon open.

Olón is a starting point for a quieter beach-centered stay; Montañita suits travelers who specifically want its surf-town businesses and evening scene. Check the accommodation’s immediate surroundings rather than relying on either town’s reputation. After arriving, choose a meal, a permitted beach walk or a lesson only if timing and the instructor’s assessment support it. A late transfer should not put an activity deposit at risk.

  2. 06
Return to Guayaquil for the final night.

Reserve the complete road journey to the selected hotel and check current road conditions. Do not add an inland forest outing or a distant beach visit before this time-sensitive transfer. A short local morning may be possible, but the return is the day’s main purpose. Confirm tomorrow’s airport meeting time after arrival.

  3. 07
    Depart from the planned airport.

Use the confirmed transfer and leave the departure day free of another coastal journey. Check the flight’s calendar date and airline check-in requirement, especially after midnight. This plan contains six nights; keeping the beach room on night six and returning for the flight on day seven is a different, more tightly connected arrangement.

Ways to change the week

Choose the experience worth staying for.

The full itinerary contains three bases and several road days. These alternatives let you change that balance without treating the airport return as spare sightseeing time.

01

Fewer moves

Stay four nights in Puerto López.

Keep Guayaquil on nights one and six, with Puerto López on nights two through five. This removes the Olón or Montañita check-in and creates a third full day for Los Frailes, Agua Blanca or a rescheduled offshore outing. It is the more useful version when Machalilla is the main reason for traveling.

02

Beach priority

Use one beach base for the middle four nights.

If repeated surf lessons or an unhurried beach routine matter more than Machalilla, stay in Olón or Montañita for nights two through five and return to Guayaquil on day six. Choose the first lesson with a suitable instructor, then decide how much repetition you want. Do not add Puerto López as a hurried day trip simply to preserve every place name from the original route.

03

Land-only Puerto López

Give history and landscape separate days.

Use one day for a community-led Agua Blanca visit and another for Los Frailes. Ask the community what the program includes and whether a longer nature walk is available when that is your interest. This avoids making a boat crossing the measure of a successful coast stay and gives each land visit time of its own.

04

Choosing a vessel

Get the operating company and program in writing.

The agency selling a tour may not operate the boat. Confirm the company, current authorization, guiding, boarding arrangements, water activities and return point. Ask what happens if conditions cancel or shorten the departure. A missed wildlife sighting and a cancelled trip may have different refund terms.

05

Food

Let meals explain the different stops.

The coast offers more than a generic seafood plate. In Guayaquil, compare an encebollado meal with a cacao-focused museum visit. In Puerto López, ask what fish is being served and how it is prepared; in the beach towns, bolón or ceviche can be separate food interests rather than automatic add-ons to every menu. Use the food guide for ingredients, and confirm dietary needs with the kitchen.

06

Booking order

Confirm transport before excursion deposits.

Confirm the flights and complete ground transfers first. Then book the six nights and the excursion that matters most, leaving a land-based alternative for a day when a boat cannot operate. Keep accommodation and operator contacts together so the order can be adjusted without rebuilding the whole trip.

Route sources

Check the details that can change.

Tourism and community sources support the places, visitor interests and main whale season described. The six-night calendar is Ecuador Listo’s editorial example. Confirm current opening sessions and transport for your dates.

A week with fewer alarms

A week with the airport return included.

Choose the three-base version for a brief contrast between Machalilla and a beach town, or remove that last move for another full day around Puerto López. Both versions preserve a final arrival in Guayaquil before the international departure.

Six nights: Guayaquil 1, Puerto López 3, Olón or Montañita 1, Guayaquil 1. Two full outing days: Choose land and sea, or two land interests, around Puerto López. Return on day six: Keep the long coastal drive separate from the flight day.
