Seven days through Quito, Cotopaxi and Baños.

Seven calendar days and six nights: three nights in Quito, two in Baños and a final Quito-area night before departure on day seven. Cotopaxi is an optional day from Quito, with a city alternative if altitude, access or weather makes the mountain unsuitable.

Count the nights first

Two bases, one optional mountain day.

This route starts and ends at Quito’s airport. It fits a first visit when you want a historic city, a day in the highland landscape and time around Baños without changing accommodation every night. Arrival on day one and departure on day seven are travel days. The Cotopaxi visit is optional, and no summit or refuge ascent is required. Confirm the flights and complete transfers before treating these day numbers as a booking.

  1. 01
    Quito · nights 1–3

Arrive and settle on day one, explore the historic center on day two, then choose Cotopaxi or a second city day on day three. Keep the same room for all three nights; the day trip should return to Quito.

  2. 02
    Baños · nights 4–5

Travel on day four and use the remaining afternoon locally. Day five is the full outing day: choose the Waterfall Route or one guided activity. This is one full day in Baños, not two.

  3. 03
    Quito area · night 6

Return on day six and sleep in the Quito area before the day-seven flight. Choose the last room in relation to the actual airport transfer. A city-center address and a Tababela airport-area address create different final evenings.

01—02 · Arrival and the historic center

Give Quito a complete city day.

The first two nights stay in the same accommodation. This avoids packing immediately after arrival and keeps the initial sightseeing easy to shorten. Use the Quito base guide to choose between the historic center, northern neighborhoods and an airport-area stay; a convenient flight connection is not necessarily a convenient sightseeing base.

  1. 01
Arrive, check in and leave the evening open.

Arrange the airport meeting point, destination address and response to a delayed flight. After checking in, keep food and any short walk close to the accommodation. A late arrival should not require crossing the city for a reservation. Quito is already at altitude: leave demanding outings for a separate decision and read the health guide before travel.

  2. 02
    Follow one historic-center route.

Use the Plaza Grande–La Compañía–San Francisco walk as the main structure, with one principal interior visit and time for lunch. Check opening and service times for the places you intend to enter. Leave a distant viewpoint or another district for a later trip instead of turning the afternoon into several taxi rides. Return to the same Quito room for night two.

03 · Cotopaxi or another Quito day

Choose the outing you are ready for.

Day three can be a Cotopaxi landscape visit returning to Quito. It is not a compulsory test of altitude. Two nights in the city do not establish that a higher excursion is suitable for everyone. Confirm the intended visitor sites, current access, guide arrangements and individual health needs before deciding.

  1. 03
Make Limpiopungo the purpose, if the day suits.

Ask for a lake-and-páramo outing with the walking distance and highest point stated clearly. A Limpiopungo visit, a José Rivas refuge approach and a summit expedition are different activities. Do not let a loosely described “Cotopaxi tour” decide the ambition for you. Confirm that pickup and return are at your Quito accommodation and keep dinner flexible around the return.

  2. Or
Use a second city day when the mountain does not fit.

Choose a museum, market or neighborhood that interests you and group the visits geographically. The Quito food section distinguishes different market stops. This keeps the room and the following transfer unchanged. If altitude symptoms are present, follow medical guidance rather than simply replacing one strenuous activity with another.

04—07 · Baños and the return

Keep one full day for the valley.

Baños receives two nights and one complete day between its arrival and departure. That supports a focused visit, not every waterfall, thermal pool and adventure activity. Day six returns to Quito before the international flight. If two full activity days in Baños matter more than Cotopaxi, remove the mountain day and travel to Baños on day three instead.

  1. 04
Transfer to Baños, then explore the center.

Use the road journey as the main commitment and confirm the exact accommodation drop-off. If the arrival leaves time, walk through the center to the basilica or Cabellera de la Virgen. A thermal-pool visit is optional: check the particular La Virgen facility, current session and entrance before heading there. Avoid booking an activity whose start assumes the transfer arrives precisely on time.

  2. 05
Follow the Waterfall Route or choose one activity.

For a waterfall day, select Agoyán or Manto de la Novia as an earlier stop, then allow the main visit for your chosen Pailón del Diablo entrance at Río Verde. Confirm whether the ticket covers the view or path you expect and how you return. The Baños guide explains the choices. If rafting or canyoning is your priority, give it this day instead of stacking it after the gorge.

  3. 06
    Return to the Quito area.

Check the road and pickup arrangements before leaving Baños. Specify whether the transfer ends at a city hotel or near the airport; “Quito” is not a complete drop-off address. Any sightseeing after arrival is optional. Put the final night where the departure-morning transfer is practical, and settle its meeting time using the airline’s check-in requirement.

  4. 07
    Depart from Quito.

Use the confirmed airport transfer and leave the morning free of distant visits. The itinerary ends today after six nights. If your flight leaves after midnight, read the ticket date carefully and work backward from the required airport arrival; the date printed on the ticket may require leaving the hotel on the previous evening.

Decisions that change this week

Adjust the route before you pay.

The calendar is an editorial suggestion, not a tour timetable. Match it to the actual flights, road services and activities available for your dates. The following changes preserve the day count instead of hiding an extra night.

01

More Baños time

Trade the mountain day for another valley day.

Use two nights in Quito, three in Baños and the final Quito-area night. Travel on day three, leaving days four and five for distinct Baños outings. Choose a waterfall day and a town or guided-activity day. The total remains six nights, and the return still happens on day six.

02

Cotopaxi overnight

Treat a rural stay as a different allocation.

An overnight near the park needs its own accommodation, evening meal and onward transfer. Do not add it to this six-night plan without removing a night elsewhere. Ask the property for its elevation and precise location, then compare the whole arrangement with a day trip returning to your existing Quito room.

03

Late arrival

Keep day two usable rather than overloading it.

If the arrival is very late, shorten the historic-center day and leave the next morning flexible. A prebooked dawn departure on day three could undo that flexibility. Prioritize the visit you most want and check its cancellation terms before paying for both city and mountain activities.

04

Transport

Price each complete road journey.

Compare the Quito–Baños transfer and the separate return, including the actual pickup addresses, luggage and any requested stop. Read current transport and area advice before choosing a service. The door-to-door worksheet keeps terminal access and the final hotel transfer visible.

05

Packing

Keep a dry layer through the scenery change.

The planned week combines highland weather with waterfall spray and possible pool visits. Keep rain protection accessible on the Cotopaxi day and a dry change available after the gorge. Ask about equipment for any guided activity; swimwear and a towel do not replace the operator’s specific requirements.

06

What to leave out

Give Quilotoa, the Amazon or the coast another allocation.

Each extra destination changes the number of usable days and the return journey. If Quilotoa matters more than Cotopaxi, compare the two highland outings and replace one. An Amazon stay is better planned through the ten-day route than attached as a detour to the only full Baños day.

The useful version of a short trip

Seven days, with the return included.

The route gives Quito a city day, leaves one highland outing optional and protects a complete Baños day before the trip back. Its value comes from knowing which days are available and which belong to transport.

Six nights: Quito 3, Baños 2, Quito area 1. Optional altitude: Choose Cotopaxi only when the outing and your response suit it. Return on day six: Keep the long road journey separate from the day-seven flight.
